"Signs" is the next feature film from writer/director M. Night Shyamalan that follows his hits "The Sixth Sense" and "Unbreakable." The thriller is set in Bucks County, Pennsylvania and is about the strange appearance of five-hundred-foot-sized circles and lines in a farm family's crop fields. Family patriarch Graham Hess (Mel Gibson), a man of the Christian faith, struggles to learn the truth behind the bizarre mystery. Merrill Hess (Joaquin Phoenix) is Graham's brother and a former minor league baseball star. Actor Mark Ruffalo was originally slated to play the second lead, but dropped out because of an operation to remove an inner ear cyst. The family is rounded out by Graham's two children Bo and Morgan (Abigail Breslin and Rory Culkin, the younger brother of Macaulay and Kieran). The production crew reportedly set up a temporary studio in a warehouse in Bensalem, PA, while exterior shooting has took place all over Bucks and Chester Counties, including the towns of Newtown, Doylestown and Morrisville. Delaware Valley College, a Doylestown school known for its agricultural program, was the scene of most of the filming. Small business owners are said to have received between $5,000 and $10,000 for use of their facilities.
The movie is based on a spec script written by M. Night Shyamalan which Disney reportedly purchased for eight-figures after only one day's review. But since Shyamalan's previous two movies have grossed over $1 billion for Disney, it was an easy decision to loosen the purse strings. Shyamalan previously received $10 million upfront for "Unbreakable," so "Signs" probably commanded at least as much. As with his previous films, Shyamalan has kept a tight lid on the details of the movie. Supposedly security was so tight that the script was printed on red paper to make copying more difficult. Shyamalan was born Manoj Nelliyattu Shyamalan in Pondicherry, Tamil-Nadu province, India, but grew up in a posh area of Philadelphia. The son of two doctors, he was given a Super-8 camera by age 8 and completed 45 home movies by age 17. After graduating from NYU's Tisch School of the Arts, he made two films which met with modest success before scoring big with "The Sixth Sense" in 1999.
Crop circles are a much debated phenomenon that mostly seem to be hoaxes. Especially common in southern England, the mysterious patterns are found in rural areas and are often linked to ancient remains such as Stonehenge. It is said that the patterns are messages from extra-terrestrials or UFO landing sights, although back in the Middle Ages the chief suspects were witches and fairies. The first recorded sighting of a crop circle was in 815 AD and they have since been detected around the globe. Over the years, the circles have become increasingly complex, often featuring ornate designs that resemble snowflakes. Working in the nascent research field known as cereology, a few scientists have spent many hours devising explanations that the circles come from late night tornados or shifting magnetic fields that "electrocute" the crops. Much of this research has been funded by American billionaire Laurance Rockefeller whose foundation often supports efforts in the area of "spirituality." However, most people acknowledge that the main source of these circles are artists with footboards who trample the crops during the wee hours of the night. In fact, some of the most likely culprits are the farmers themselves, who frequently charge admission fees to gullible members of the public. Now it seems that Disney sees what a good business this has become and wants a piece of the action.
