Based upon the second book in the popular series of children's books by J.K. Rowling, following "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone," this darker sequel opens at the miserable Dursley household, where Harry is warned not to return to Hogwarts school. He decides to go anyway, but takes a flying car after the Hogwarts Express leaves without him. Once at school. he hears an evil voice that no one else can hear, apparently because the dreaded Chamber of Secrets is open again. Trouble mounts as students are turned to stone, so Harry and his friends decide to take action. Production started on November 19, 2001, with most filming done in the London area, primarily Leavesden Studios, with filming wrapping during the early summer of 2002. Special effects were provided by Industrial Light & Magic.
Harry Potter fans were shocked to learn of the October 25, 2002 death of Richard Harris, who played Albus Dumbledore, the snowy-bearded headmaster of Hogwarts wizarding school, in the first two Harry Potter films. Although filming had wrapped on "The Chamber of Secrets," Harris had already signed on to appear in "The Prisoner of Azkaban," the next Harry Potter installment expected to begin production in either February or March, 2003. Harris became ill shortly after filming was completed and died at University College Hospital in London while being treated for cancer. He had taken the role at the behest of his young granddaughter. Harris had previously starred in such films as "A Man Called Horse" and "This Sporting Life."
