The heavily anticipated 8th "Star Trek" movie opened in theatres across North America on November 22nd. Critics agree that this is the strongest "Star Trek" movie in a long time, possibly the best ever. Directed by Jonathan Frakes (who also stars as William Riker) it maintains the unique flavor of all "Star Trek" productions, while exhibiting a considerable flair for top-notch special effects and subtle plot twists.
The story begins with Captain Picard of the Enterprise having a flashback of when he was captured by The Borg, a half-flesh, half-machine race that forcibly assimilates other beings into a collective hive. As it happens, The Borg are now heading towards Earth, but Picard's timely intervention prevents them from reaching their target, though not before a small pod exits the mother ship and uses a temporal vortex to travel back to 21st century Earth. There they are able to conquer Earth by preventing man's first space warp flight, which was the event that enabled mankind to encounter the Vulcan race.
It's up to the crew of the Enterprise to somehow reverse history and ensure that man's first space warp flight takes place. Things get complicated as the rocket ship's inventor turns out to be a skeptical beatnik who is only interested in making a fortune on his creation. Picard and the android Data must also confront the ghastly but strangely seductive Borg queen who is determined to make Data her own special little conquest.
